Before You Get Started

How does investment planning fit into wealth management?

Investment planning defines what your portfolio needs to accomplish. We consider your goals, when you expect to use the money, other financial commitments and the risk you are comfortable taking. Those priorities guide the investment mix and cash reserves in the portfolio we manage for you. Planning continues within your ongoing wealth management relationship as your needs change.

Can you help me plan for a home purchase or other major expense?

Yes. We consider the expected amount and timing of the expense alongside your other goals. That helps us determine how much should remain accessible and how much can stay invested for the longer term.

When funds will be needed soon, we pay particular attention to market risk, cash availability and potential taxes from selling investments. The purchase becomes part of the portfolio strategy from the outset.

How do you consider investments and assets held elsewhere?

We consider the information you share about other investment accounts, retirement plans, real estate and business interests when developing your strategy. These assets can affect your overall risk, available income and need for cash.

For example, substantial company stock may make diversification elsewhere especially important. This broader view informs the accounts we manage; assets held elsewhere remain outside our management unless included in the advisory relationship.

What if my goals or circumstances change?

Your investment strategy should evolve with your life. A career change, inheritance, home purchase, family commitment or revised retirement date can affect when you need money and how much investment risk is appropriate.

Let us know when your circumstances change. We revisit your priorities and determine whether your investment mix, cash reserves or planned withdrawals should be adjusted.

How do I get started?

Begin with a complimentary portfolio review. We discuss what you want your investments to support, when you may need access to money and any financial decisions ahead.

A recent account statement and a general picture of your goals provide a useful starting point. We explain how your current investments fit those priorities and whether ongoing management could be useful. There is no obligation to become a client.
